Special Roles

New Special Roles for Player Characters

Remember, special roles become available to player characters after they fulfill certain developmental requirements. Think of them as professions within a military order. The original special roles may be found in the LightRaider Handbook.

DragonSlayer

(Joe Revesz)

Has anyone ever noticed that the New Player Briefing (page 3, next to last paragraph) mentions a Special Character Role of DragonSlayer but there is no character description?  Here is a suggested description.

A LightRaider may choose to become a DragonSlayer only after reaching a score of 8 in each of his Character Strengths. Also, a LightRaider may not have had any other special role before this point. A DragonSlayer automatically receives a permanent +2 in Knowledge (and Belt of Truth) and a +3 in Shield of Faith. A DragonSlayer may recite two WordRunes per round when in combat with a Dragon.

If there is not a RaidLeader in the raid team, the DragonSlayer fulfills this role. Rarely will a DragonSlayer leave a battle before the dragon is defeated, since it would dishonor the OLMN who sends the DragonSlayer into battle. Many DragonSlayers have been killed by foul dragon fire while delivering a mortal blow to the hellish beast.

PrayerWarrior

(Joe Revesz)

Quite a while ago, we had a discussion on the DragonRaid email list about some players who did not want to actively promote fighting and combat in the game.  Because combat with Dark Creatures is an allegory to fighting sin in a believer’s life, I personally believe that DragonRaid does not clash with pacifism.  Those feeling this conflict may be confusing real-life combat in wartime situations with the DragonRaid allegory of fighting sin.  In any case, the PrayerWarrior is designed for the pacifist player, and those who like a challenge in role playing.

[Courage = 5 or more],

(FA+LO+JO+PE+RME+KN)/6 = highest Difficulty Level WordRune usable for this LightRaider.

This is the only Special Character Class which a LightRaider may choose at the start of his first adventure.  A PrayerWarrior may only use a staff, shield, or Hand-to-Hand combat to defend himself, or a fallen comrade, when necessary. The PrayerWarrior may not use weapons to attack for any reason.  If a PrayerWarrior physically attacks a Dark Creature, dragon slave, or even a dragon, the LightRaider loses (at the Adventure Master’s discretion) his PrayerWarrior status for one entire adventure (not the current one, but the following adventure).

The PrayerWarrior uses all WordRunes and TeamRunes normally, even when fighting dragons.  Special WordRunes for the PrayerWarrior are listed below.

During combat, one of the following actions may be performed; the PrayerWarrior may use a WordRune, defend himself, move, pray for one member of the Raid Team, or perform some other action. For every two rounds of prayer by the PrayerWarrior, the OLMN may grant a +1 to the Shield of Faith of one LightRaider on the team. This bonus will last until the end of the fight. This bonus may accumulate, so that some LightRaiders can have +2, +3,… The PrayerWarrior must remain undisturbed during prayer, if he is hit, the PrayerWarrior can not continue prayer for a Shadow Stone roll of combat rounds. Also, a COurage roll must be made before each prayer, if failed, the PrayerWarrior must do something else that round.  For his prayer bonus to count, the PrayerWarrior must be within sight of the battle, and not hiding. The bonuses awarded before a PrayerWarrior is disturbed or stops praying for any reason are not lost.

As the PrayerWarrior grows in the OLMN, his prayer bonus grows also. At SS = 3, the prayer bonus is +2, SS = 6; +3, and SS = 9; +4.

There may be only one PrayerWarrior per Raid Team.

(EN + CLS + MC + PE + QM + WM) / 6 = 7 or higher

A RescueMaster has been taught to overcome great physical obstacles and spiritual difficulties to rescue someone or something. He is more proficient in skills requiring climbing, swimming, and dealing with people than most other LightRaiders. Once a LightRaider qualifies for RescueMaster, he receives a permanent bonus of +2 in his Climb Skillfully, Merciful Compassion, and Water Movement Character Abilities.
