Joshua 1:8 tells us, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”
Soldiers have various training manuals and regulations they must follow. These documents teach them the military’s rules and prepare them for a successful military career. Unfortunately, many Soldiers do not know some of the most basic rules.
As a Senior NCO, I have frequently had to explain simple regulations to Soldiers and show them the documents where the rules can be found. Many of the Soldiers that I have had to explain these regulations too, have been a higher rank than me. I have always been surprised by this. The regulations are freely available to Soldiers. Since many of these Soldiers do not know the rules, their lack of knowledge can lead them to getting in trouble, or even missing a promotion.
Unfortunately, many Christians find themselves in the same situation. They struggle with sins, temptations, and various other struggles, and are unsure how to deal with these. They may not realize they have the greatest resource at their disposal. The Bible is freely available to us. The Word of God is always there to help us, give us encouragement, and as it says in 2 Timothy 3:16, “..is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”

The Sadducees were guilty of not knowing the Word of God in the Book of Matthew. When asking Jesus questions about the resurrection of the dead, Jesus replied to them in Matthew 22:29, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.” The Sadducees were supposed to be teachers of the law, yet they did not know the Scriptures they were teaching. Like the higher-ranking Soldiers mentioned earlier, they should have been subject matter experts, but sadly, they were not.
In the opening verse, it says to “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips.” It says that doing this will help make you follow it easier, and this disciplined reading of the Word will bring you success. As a Christian Soldier, the Bible is your regulation and training manual. The more you are reading and studying it, the better you will be able to perform your Christian duties.
Make a new commitment right now to read the Word of God daily.
